Demänovská Cave of Liberty

The Demänová Cave of Freedom is part of the huge underground karst system in the Demänovská valley below the Low Tatras. It boasts a unique drip stone ornamentation, which makes it one of the most beautiful caves of Europe.

The entrance is at the altitude of 870 m and it is accessible via switchbacks that start at the parking lot. One has to climb the altitude difference of 67 m (about 10 minutes). The total length of its corridors is more than 8,400 m, out of which 7,624 m have been surveyed so far. There are two visitor routes available; the longer one of then is 2,150 m long (can be walked in 100 minutes), while the shorter of them (1,150 m) takes 60 minutes. There are numerous large hollow spaces in this cave called halls and domes with wonderful sinters.

Veľký dóm or the Large Dome with dimensions 75x45x65 m is the largest of them. Apart from several stretches of underground channel of the Demänovka, the visitors can also see the cave lakes. The big lake is as much as 52 m long and 7 m deep. In the Demänová Cave of Freedom there is a permanent temperature of 6.1 to 7.0 degrees Celsius all over the year. High relative air humidity of 94 to 99 percent is suitable for therapy. Diseases of the respiratory tract and allergies are successfully cured here.

Long tour

Except for the traditional one it contains: the Great Dome – the largest underground space in Slovak show caves with underground riverbed and moonmilk wall. The second part – Pink Hall and Král’s Gallery is morphologically the most varied part of this cave with unique cave water lilies and sponge shapes in lakes, cave pearls and many shapes of flowstone decoration all along the way.

Long tour is provided for minimum of 10 persons. Entry time in the off-season is at 13:00, in the main season at 13:15.

Traditional tour

The visit of the most interesting parts of the Demänovský Cave System, opened to public since 5.5.1933. Unique flowstone forms, underground Demänovka River, karst pools and typical river modelled passages and ceiling channels. The upper levels are with rich dripstone decoration of the walls, fissures and ceilings. The stops are at the most interesting places with vocational commentary oriented to genesis and history of the cave with description of individual parts.
