The synagogue is one of the most beautiful and interesting cultural monuments in Ružomberok. It is located in the city centre, on Panská street, near the confluence of the Váh and Revúca rivers.
The synagogue was built in the Neo-Romanesque, Moorish style. Only the aron qodesh and rare chandeliers have been preserved from the original furnishings. The aron qodesh is an ornamental chamber in synagogues. It is loosely placed on the eastern wall of the synagogue facing towards Jerusalem. On its edges there are two pillars that resemble the Pillars of Solomon at the entrance to the Temple in Jerusalem. Inside the building there are two side spiral staircases and, on the first floor, a three-sided gallery. In the interior, it is also worth noting the ornamental decoration of the vaults.
The synagogue was built according to the model of the Miskolc Synagogue in 1880, and served as a prayer room for the Jewish religious community. One unexpected event during its construction was when the scaffolding burned down. During the Second World War, the Jewish religious community ceased to exist and the synagogue thus lost its original purpose. During the war, it also served as an army warehouse and, from 1945, was used as a warehouse for cotton factories. The building fell into disrepair for many years.
Extensive reconstruction in 2013 and 2014 transformed the abandoned synagogue into a cultural centre that regularly hosts exhibitions, concerts, theatre performances and other cultural events.
