Symbolický cintorín obetiam Nízkych Tatier (a symbolic cemetery for hikers who lost their lives in the Low Tatras), Ostredok – come and enjoy the silence of nature.
The shortest way to get to the symbolic cemetery is to follow a footpath from Biela Púť through Ostredok. It is an easy walk suitable for everyone. Several interesting stops along the way make this route a favourite with children and adults alike.
Jasná – Symbolický cintorín (symbolic cemetery) 0.30 h Starting point: Jasná Biela púť – turn off of the main road at the cross and continue along a relatively undemanding route, marked yellow.
After about 10 minutes, you will come to the Ján Šverma Memorial, from where it will take you another 20 – 25 minutes to reach the symbolic cemetery of the fallen in the Low Tatras, which was reconstructed in 2008. Along the way, you will come across an observation tower where you can rest your feet and enjoy beautiful views over the Chopok mountain.
In the chapel at the symbolic cemetery in Stodôlky, the Demänovská Dolina valley, you will find 146 plates with the names of those who lost their lives in the Low Tatras. There also is “Horská pieta” (Mountain pieta), a sculpture symbolizing a mother’s grief over the loss of her child created by an academic sculptor Alfonz Groma. Inside the cemetery, there is the coat of arms of the Slovak Republic, a bell cast by artists from Liptovský Mikuláš and a monumental, six-metre high wooden cross carved by Emil Halaj, a carver from the village of Kriváň. The cross was transported to the site on the roof of a mountain rescue service vehicle, fixed to a concrete foundation and erected with the use of climbing ropes.
Stop for a moment at this place and light a candle in memory of those who breathed their last in the place they loved so much – mountains.
