Liptovská Mara is a water reservoir between Liptovský Mikuláš and Ružomberok, which is also called “Liptov sea”. It is part of dam cascade system on a river Váh. With a total volume of 360.5 mil. m3 is the largest water reservoir in Slovakia.
The dam was built in the years 1969-1975. During the construction, 13 villages were flooded, of which 12 completely, Liptovský Trnovec partially. A total of 940 families were displaced, representing more than 4,000 inhabitants. The most valuable monuments from the floodplain are transferred to the Museum of the Liptov Village in Pribylina.
The main purpose of the dam is flood protection, but it also serves for the production of electricity, as there are 4 turbines with an output of 198 MW under the dam.
There are a wide range of fishing opportunities on Liptovská Mara, and you can also take a sightseeing boat trip from the port of Liptovský Trnovec. In summer, the dam offers a wide range of water sports such as swimming, boating, surfing, jet skiing and more.
The Ratkovie peninsula with adjacent waters is a protected area. Above the dam wall, 2 km south of the village of Bobrovník, at the eastern foot of the Úložisko hill (741.7 m above sea level) is the Havránok archeological site – a Celtic fortification of the Kotín settlement with a Druid shrine from the 1st century BC. There is also a open air museum.
