Dead Bats Cave (Jaskyňa mŕtvych netopierov) is one of the largest and most significant high-altitude caves in Slovakia. It is located in the central part of the ridge of the Low Tatras, in the Ďumbier upland karst (1,750 m above sea level). The relatively small, deeply folded limestone massif of Kozie chrbty, measuring 2 km in length and only 300 m wide, contains many corridors over 14 known levels and two parallel branches. The underground labyrinth currently runs for 19,885 m and has a depth of 324 m. The largest underground chamber – the Bystrický Dome – is located on the seventh level at a depth of 180 m, and has a volume of 52,500 m3.
The cave’s temperature averages +3.5 °C, although some frozen parts have an average year-round temperature of only +1 °C. Air can flow at up to 5 m/s because of how open the system is.
